Choosing the Best Exterior Paint for the Pacific Northwest

All articles
March 2026

Rain, UV, and temperature swings demand more than a basic coating. Here's what we look for in every can that goes on a Washington home.

Pacific Northwest weather is famously hard on exterior finishes. Persistent moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and surprisingly strong summer UV all conspire to break down lesser paints in just a few seasons.

We specify premium acrylic exterior systems with high solids content, mildewcide additives, and proven flexibility ratings. The right primer matters even more than the topcoat - bare cedar, Hardi-board, and previously painted surfaces each require different priming strategies.

Prep is non-negotiable. Power washing, scraping, sanding, and spot-priming are what make a 10-year finish actually last 10 years. If a contractor is quoting a single-day exterior repaint with no prep, walk away.
